How an AC Works
There are eight parts to an AC unit: the condenser unit located outside, the compressor, the fan, the meter, the evaporator, the blower, a filter, and a thermostat. All these parts work to cool hot air and distribute cool air throughout your house.
First, you set the thermostat to the desired temperature. When your house is above the desired temperature, the thermostat sends a signal that turns on the compressor and fan. The compressor then pumps refrigerant through the system and eventually to the metering device. The refrigerant is then chilled before it flows through the evaporator coil.
After that, the blower moves the air through the house. Room-temperature air flows into the return vent and is cleaned of contaminants when it passes through the air filters. That room-temperature air is absorbed into the refrigerant located inside the evaporator coil. That’s how your house is cooled off.
Any problem you have with the AC means that some part of the process not working right. So, what should you do when you notice a problem?
Hot Air Coming From the AC
When the air conditioner is on, but hot air is coming out of it instead of cold, turn off the AC and then look at both the condenser fins and refrigerant level.
Condensers are easily clogged with dirt and debris, and you should clean them off regularly. When they’re dirty, they can prevent the AC from working properly. Use a soft toothbrush or cloth to wipe the outside of the fins. Then, use a butter knife to clean dirt and mud stuck inside the fins. Be careful because they bend easily. If necessary, wash the fins with gentle pressure to remove any remaining dirt and debris.
After that, check the refrigerant level. If the AC is low on refrigerant, you will need to replace it.
AC Is Not Coming On
If the AC won’t turn on, check the thermostat. Look to see if it needs a new battery and if you have the thermostat set at the right temperature.
There’s a Strange Smell Coming From the AC
If the air coming from the vents smells off in some way, try replacing the filters. Air filters need to be changed regularly, especially during the summer.
